# debug_traceCall

POST https://rpc.plume.org/YOUR_API_KEY
Content-Type: application/json

**Availability:** Access to the `debug` namespace depends on your endpoint's method allowlist. Starting **August 4, 2026 at 12:00 PM PST**, all `debug_*` methods require an API key appended to the RPC URL — unauthenticated calls are rejected. If you receive `-32601 method not found` or `method not supported` errors, contact Conduit support to confirm your endpoint's configuration.

Traces a call against a particular block, returning detailed execution information per the chosen tracer. Useful for inspecting call traces, reconstructing state changes, or debugging reverts.

The `tracer` choice in the config object controls the result shape (`callTracer` returns a nested call tree; `prestateTracer` returns a pre/post state diff; `noopTracer` returns nothing; etc.). When `tracer` is omitted, Geth defaults to the structured-opcode tracer (very verbose; not usually what you want).

⚡ Compute Units: [300 CU](https://docs.conduit.xyz/rpc-nodes/information/compute-units)

Reference: https://docs.conduit.xyz/rpc-nodes/json-rpc-reference/debug-trace-call

## Request

### Body (application/json)

This endpoint expects an object.

- `transaction` (CallObject, required) — Transaction call object — same shape as `eth_call`.
- `blockIdentifier` (BlockNumberOrTagOrHash, optional) — Block number, tag, or hash. Defaults to `"latest"` when omitted (per reth; geth requires it — we follow the looser).
- `config` (TraceConfig, optional) — Trace configuration. Shared shape across all `debug_trace*` methods; see the `TraceConfig` schema.

## Response

### 200

Tracer-dependent. For `callTracer` the result is a `CallTrace` object describing the outermost call and its nested sub-calls. For other tracers see the corresponding tracer's documentation.

- `DebugTraceCallResult`

## Types

### CallObject

A transaction call object. All fields are optional. Both `data` and `input` are accepted for backwards compatibility — `input` is the canonical field per the Ethereum execution spec.

- `from` (string, optional) — 20-byte sender address (optional)
- `to` (string, optional) — 20-byte target address (optional for contract creation)
- `gas` (string, optional) — Gas limit as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `gasPrice` (string, optional) — Legacy gas price in wei as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `maxFeePerGas` (string, optional) — EIP-1559 max total fee per gas in wei as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `maxPriorityFeePerGas` (string, optional) — EIP-1559 max miner tip per gas in wei as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `maxFeePerBlobGas` (string, optional) — EIP-4844 max fee per blob gas in wei as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `value` (string, optional) — Value in wei as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `data` (string, optional) — ABI-encoded call data, hex-encoded (optional). Alias for `input`; prefer `input` for new clients.
- `input` (string, optional) — ABI-encoded call data, hex-encoded (optional). Canonical name per Ethereum execution spec; alias of `data`.
- `nonce` (string, optional) — Sender nonce as hex-encoded integer (optional, ignored by `eth_call` but accepted)
- `type` (string, optional) — Transaction type as hex-encoded byte (optional): 0x0 legacy, 0x1 EIP-2930 access list, 0x2 EIP-1559, 0x3 EIP-4844 blob, 0x4 EIP-7702 authorization
- `chainId` (string, optional) — Chain ID as hex-encoded integer (optional)
- `accessList` (list of CallObjectAccessListItems, optional) — EIP-2930 access list (optional). Pre-declaring storage slots the transaction will touch reduces gas cost.
- `blobs` (list of string, optional) — EIP-4844 blob data, raw 128KB blobs as hex-encoded bytes (optional). Typically only used by builder/sequencer code paths.
- `blobVersionedHashes` (list of string, optional) — EIP-4844 versioned hashes of blob commitments (optional). One hash per blob.
- `authorizationList` (list of CallObjectAuthorizationListItems, optional) — EIP-7702 authorization list (optional). Each entry is a signed authorization tuple.

### BlockNumberOrTagOrHash

### TraceConfig

Trace configuration used by every `debug_trace*` method. `tracer` selects the tracer; `tracerConfig` is the tracer-specific options object whose shape depends on `tracer`.

- `tracer` (string, optional) — Tracer name. Common values: `callTracer` (nested call tree — the most useful), `prestateTracer` (pre/post state diff), `4byteTracer`, `noopTracer`, `muxTracer`, `flatCallTracer`. Geth also accepts arbitrary JS tracer source as a string. When omitted, Geth defaults to the structured-opcode tracer (very verbose).
- `tracerConfig` (TraceConfigTracerConfig, optional) — Tracer-specific options. For `callTracer`: `{onlyTopCall: bool, withLog: bool}`. For `prestateTracer`: `{diffMode: bool}`. Shape varies per tracer — see Geth or Reth docs for the active tracer.
- `timeout` (string, optional) — Maximum execution time as a Go duration string, e.g. `"5s"`. Defaults to 5 seconds.
- `disableStack` (boolean, optional) — Only meaningful for the default opcode tracer; omits stack info in steps.
- `disableStorage` (boolean, optional) — Only meaningful for the default opcode tracer; omits storage info in steps.
- `enableMemory` (boolean, optional) — Only meaningful for the default opcode tracer; includes memory info in steps.
- `enableReturnData` (boolean, optional) — Only meaningful for the default opcode tracer; includes returnData.
- `stateOverrides` (StateOverride, optional) — Per-address state overrides applied before the traced call executes (`debug_traceCall` only).
- `blockOverrides` (BlockOverride, optional) — Block-header field overrides applied to the traced call (`debug_traceCall` only).

### CallTrace

Nested call-tree entry returned by the `callTracer`. The top-level object describes the outermost call; each entry's `calls` array contains sub-calls in execution order.

- `type` (string, optional) — Call opcode: `CALL`, `STATICCALL`, `DELEGATECALL`, `CALLCODE`, `CREATE`, `CREATE2`, or `SELFDESTRUCT`.
- `from` (string, optional)
- `to` (string, optional)
- `value` (string, optional) — ETH value transferred, in wei.
- `gas` (string, optional) — Gas provided to the call.
- `gasUsed` (string, optional) — Gas actually consumed by the call (including sub-calls).
- `input` (string, optional) — Calldata (or init code, for CREATE/CREATE2).
- `output` (string, optional) — Return data (or deployed bytecode, for CREATE/CREATE2). Absent when the call reverted with no return data.
- `error` (string, optional) — Present if the call reverted or errored. Common values: `execution reverted`, `out of gas`, `invalid opcode`.
- `revertReason` (string, optional) — Human-readable revert reason (decoded from `Error(string)` if present).
- `logs` (list of Log, optional) — Only present when the tracer was configured with `withLog: true`.
- `calls` (list of CallTrace, optional) — Sub-calls made from this frame, in execution order.
